The Cummins Electronic Control Unit (ECU), also referred to as the Electronic Control Module (ECM), serves as the central processing unit for Cummins diesel engines. It manages critical engine functions including fuel injection timing, quantity, and pressure regulation via high-pressure common rail systems. The module processes inputs from crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, coolant temperature, intake manifold pressure, and exhaust gas temperature sensors to optimize combustion efficiency and meet emissions standards. The unit features a ruggedized aluminum housing designed to withstand severe vibration, thermal cycling, and moisture ingress typical of off-highway construction equipment environments. Internal circuitry conforms to automotive electronics standards for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection. Communication interfaces support SAE J1939 CAN protocol for integration with vehicle multiplexing systems, diagnostic tools, and telematics gateways. Serviceability requires authorized Cummins INSITE software for calibration matching, fault code retrieval, and parameter programming specific to the engine Control Parts List (CPL).
